a rainbow quilt with curves

I made this quilt for my daughter, using fabric contributed by a couple dozen friends and family members (in addition to fabrics I had left over from countless other projects).

I posted another photoessay over at the Day In The Life LJ community.

mockup of Little Bear's quilt
This is a sketchy layout of a quilt I'm working on, with nothing sewn together yet. At this point it looks better viewed in thumbnail form:

The curves, of course, will look smoother once it's sewn together -- but also, the optical illusion will work better when I have a bunch more fabrics representing more tints and shades. If you happen to have any scraps of quilters' cotton you want to contribute, in saturated colors and relatively monochromatic, I'd appreciate them. Anything that's at least 3.5 inches is useful.

I'll be showing my quilts, bags, photography, and more at Arlington's Open Studio, October 13th and 14th from noon to 5pm. More than 80 artists participate in this event, all in one building, Arlington Center for the Arts -- 41 Foster Street, between Mass Ave and Broadway in East Arlington. You can also enjoy performances by local musicians and refreshments from Flora Restaurant. For more information on the
event, visit its webpage. For more info on my work, see my webpage.

The puzzle enthusiasts among you will be interested to know that I'll have a puzzle quilt on display, newly completed and in need of test-solving. This one won't photograph well, so solve it in person if you can!

a quilt made of lots of pink and blue triangles
I did some volunteer work for Beloved Quilts over the summer, making quilts to donate to homeless shelters, and this is the back of the most recent one I finished. The triangles were someone's unfinished quilt project that had been donated to the Nave Gallery for their crafters' yardsale, and the front of the quilt was made by a volunteer at a previous quilting event -- so three different people worked on this particular quilt.

If you're interested in making Beloved quilts, there should be a quilting day coming up in September -- no sewing experience necessary! Comment here and I'll send you the info as soon as I know when and where the event will be. If you're not Boston-local, you can still make Beloved quilts to donate wherever you are.

We went to Shelburne Museum this weekend to see the quilts, among other things. Their current exhibition is called Man-Made Quilts, and features the work of male quilters from the Civil War era to the present. One piece was by Fraser Smith -- it's the third quilt in the third row, called "Calypso" -- and I took a close look at it but still didn't realize it was made of something other than fabric until I read the placard next to it!

denim place mats

I'll be showing my work in Somerville Open Studios this weekend, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6pm. I have new quilts, bags, braided-rug trivets, friendship bracelets, and miniature pottery. If you're Boston-local, I hope you'll stop by and visit me at 39 Lexington Ave, Somerville.
