So is it just an illusion or are the lighter colored patches actually longer than the darker ones? The illusion was especially prominent when I had my glasses off so it was blurry.
I'm particularly amazed that the oranges and the blues look good together--in my experience, that's really rare!
This also reminds me a bit of a challenge quilt that I saw, years ago, in which the artist had created a stylized city skyline--dark skyscrapers with glowing windows against a midnight sky.
Thanks for sharing this, both for the sight of the piece, itself, and for bringing back a pleasant memory!
Thanks! It's about 8x10" -- made for a show that's coming up soon at Arlington Center for the Arts. The theme of the show is just small works of art, anything smaller than 12".
I love blues and golds together (and reds and oranges can come along for the ride). The skyscrapers-at-night scene sounds beautiful. Reminds me of a favorite Magritte painting which I often think of at dusk: http://www.menil.org/images/surr2_magritte-V616_000.jpg
This little quilt is sort of a question, asking myself whether the lights and darks of the progression will produce an optical illusion. I expected that the yellows would appear larger than the reds, making the horizontal stripes look wider at one end than the other... and it does work, but only really in thumbnail form:
