(How is the little steam shovel going to get out of the cellar?)

More likely a crane, unless they are planning to make it into part of the HVAC system for the new building.

I'm guessing they'll drive it up the slope (at the top of which sits the larger shovel), and then have the larger shovel sit on the sidewalk and in the street as it clears the rest of the basement level.

I'm told there'll be parking in the basement, retail at ground level, and offices above.

This shows the difference between a backhoe and a power shovel: a backhoe is designed to excavate below its level, while a shovel, like Mary Anne, is designed to excavate at the same level. (Can you tell I've read that book a lot in recent years?)

Another solution would be for the big backhoe to lift the little one out with a chain.

or they'll maintain a utility ramp, possibly out of view

a skilled backhoe operator can also make the damned things CLIMB...

here's an example of spidering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsKInuGbV5E

speaking of spidering, there's a whole class of spider excavators. crazy stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqomz2j2-IQ

some of those things can also climb into railcars (with a frob), and i can't find the video, but i've seen someone who's VERY good, climb a ridiculous amount of stuff, in stages, 2x height at a go.

next time, we look into skidders and the specialty logging units they have now. cool stuff.

I figured it was put there on purpose, as in a time out. I wonder what it did, and how much longer it has to do penance.

Heh. You've been in Davis Square recently.

I also have pictures of the descendant of Mike Mulligan's steam shovel.

The photo on the left is really sad.

Which one?

For something completely different, I wanna pet your snake. (No innuendo intended.) Can I invite myself over sometime soon?

the fence between the statues. I found the imagery profound, especially considering their posture and expression.

I/we would truly love to have you and your husband over soon - we're in the middle of a huge domestic overhaul because ... well, the house is small and we tend to have a lot of things and it got really crowded - so right now it looks like a tornado hit. My schedule has been hectic too so it's pretty slow going until the end of summer semester anyway.

If you are willing to host, my snakes travel well and we have a car now, so the stress on them is pretty minimal. Otherwise, we will hopefully be able to entertain company in a couple weeks *crossing fingers*. It would be lovely to see you, though!
