Date: 2010-08-12 04:05 am (UTC)a skilled backhoe operator can also make the damned things CLIMB...
here's an example of spidering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsKInuGbV5E
speaking of spidering, there's a whole class of spider excavators. crazy stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqomz2j2-IQ
some of those things can also climb into railcars (with a frob), and i can't find the video, but i've seen someone who's VERY good, climb a ridiculous amount of stuff, in stages, 2x height at a go.
next time, we look into skidders and the specialty logging units they have now. cool stuff.

Date: 2010-08-15 05:32 pm (UTC)I/we would truly love to have you and your husband over soon - we're in the middle of a huge domestic overhaul because ... well, the house is small and we tend to have a lot of things and it got really crowded - so right now it looks like a tornado hit. My schedule has been hectic too so it's pretty slow going until the end of summer semester anyway.
If you are willing to host, my snakes travel well and we have a car now, so the stress on them is pretty minimal. Otherwise, we will hopefully be able to entertain company in a couple weeks *crossing fingers*. It would be lovely to see you, though!
