Today I worked on two playing-card costumes for an Alice In Wonderland-themed party. The designer asked me to paint a pair of shoes black for ones of the costumes.

This struck me as funny because it reminded me of the scene in Alice where the gardeners (who are playing cards) are painting the roses in the garden because they are white and the Red Queen only likes red roses. But the costume designer admitted that she hasn't actually read the books.

I'm boggling at "haven't actually read the books". To me, this is like someone asking for a sky-blue dress, and when you ask them if the color looks right to them, saying "well, I've never actually seen the sky, so I don't really know".

Then again, my impression was that Tim Burton hadn't actually read the books either.

Yeah, I kinda wanted to bring her my [Martin-Gardner-annotated] book to borrow but I didn't want to be pushy.

And I had the same impression about the movie. Liked it visually, after I managed to forget it was based on anything I knew of.
