Today I worked on two playing-card costumes for an Alice In Wonderland-themed party. The designer asked me to paint a pair of shoes black for ones of the costumes.

This struck me as funny because it reminded me of the scene in Alice where the gardeners (who are playing cards) are painting the roses in the garden because they are white and the Red Queen only likes red roses. But the costume designer admitted that she hasn't actually read the books.

They just needed to be playing cards, and she used some face cards as her model, and they turned out really well. And I guessed that they were for Alice without being told, so it's all good. This is one of those books that permeates the zeitgeist.
