Today I worked on two playing-card costumes for an Alice In Wonderland-themed party. The designer asked me to paint a pair of shoes black for ones of the costumes.

This struck me as funny because it reminded me of the scene in Alice where the gardeners (who are playing cards) are painting the roses in the garden because they are white and the Red Queen only likes red roses. But the costume designer admitted that she hasn't actually read the books.

It is absolutely ironic to be painting shoes for an Alice party!

When I was in highschool, a friend ended up painting a pair of her black character shoes white. The pair was old and she had a second pair that was newer and the director had decided that her character really should be wearing white shoes with a particular costume....

Paint black shoes white... that's a curious choice. :)

*shrug*
It was cheap, and she knew the shoes fit right and were well broken in for dancing.

Sheesh!

How can she design costumes for something she hasn't read?!?

They just needed to be playing cards, and she used some face cards as her model, and they turned out really well. And I guessed that they were for Alice without being told, so it's all good. This is one of those books that permeates the zeitgeist.

I'm boggling at "haven't actually read the books". To me, this is like someone asking for a sky-blue dress, and when you ask them if the color looks right to them, saying "well, I've never actually seen the sky, so I don't really know".

Then again, my impression was that Tim Burton hadn't actually read the books either.

Yeah, I kinda wanted to bring her my [Martin-Gardner-annotated] book to borrow but I didn't want to be pushy.

And I had the same impression about the movie. Liked it visually, after I managed to forget it was based on anything I knew of.
