They are eggplants, from Drumlin Farm at Union Square farmers' market.
I don't even like eggplants, but I couldn't resist buying them. (Luckily, majordomo will happily eat them, assuming they are good to eat after I've cooked them.)
Hm, now that you mention it, the tops do look kind of eggplant-y.
We are overrun with zucchini. First from our share in the CSA, and now Cally's emailing me to go raid her refrigerator and her garden. Had zucchini latkes for dinner tonight; will make zucchini bread shortly. (Shredded the zuchs already. Shred while the cuisinart's dirty!) And we still have three or four left of Cally's, and CSA pickup is Monday... Too bad they don't freeze, other than cooked in something (and even then it's sometimes marginal. I froze zuccanoes once and they weren't so great thawed.)
My grandmother grows prize-winning zucchini, and here's my favorite thing she does with them:
Zucchini Soup
6 zucchini (10-12 lbs), cut into 1" chunks 1 onion, think slices 2 t curry powder 4 c. chicken broth 1 1/2 c. light cream salt, pepper
Bring chicken broth, zucchini, onion, curry powder to a boil; simmer 45 minutes. Let cool, blend until smooth. Add cream, salt, pepper. Garnish with pieces of chive.
