mountain laurel, yes. My favorite trail in north georgia passes through thicket after thicket of mountain laurel. It doesn't bloom for all that long, but if you plan a hike during season, it's stunning. :-)
I used to call them "Barbie wedding flowers" because that is what I did with them. The stems stick together if slightly smushed, making them the ideal bouquet. This is when my Barbies weren't playing Swiss Family Robinson!
Yes, they are mountain laurel.. Kalmia latifolia - but not the native variety which is a rosy pink. They grew in the woods at Nana and Papa's country house in Yorktown Heights, NY. Your father probably remembers them. We used to bring armfuls of them home to Brooklyn in the spring. The white variety and an assortment of intense rose and variegated rose-and-white petals are available to buy in nurseries. Grandma
