Not really, he was on the roof of the garage, and we were on the porch overlooking it. There are stairs that lead from one to the other. Poor thing was pretty badly hurt (probably got into a fight with one or more of the cats in the neighborhood), and had come up to the garage roof to sleep it off - a raccoon asleep on a dark surface in broad daylight is a pretty good indication that something's wrong.
When I first saw him he was a mere ball of fur, asleep. I didn't realize he was a raccoon until he uncurled, at which point I was briefly worried, until I saw him try to walk -- he was dragging one leg behind him and clearly wanted to get *away* from me.
