majordomo found these mushrooms in our lawn. There were two large clumps and a multitude of smaller ones, with caps up to about three inches across. They apparently materialized overnight, and the downstairs neighbors say this happens every year about the same season. It was a nuisance to dig them up (which I did because I assume they're poisonous and didn't want any neighborhood children or pets to try eating them), but I kind of like the idea of some large and mysterious organism being symbiotic with the roots of our maple tree.
