Your pie-chart idea was wonderful! Since the Hunt was fair-themed, I called my puzzle "Home Arts," with part one being Needlecrafts and part two being Culinary. I gave them the flavortext "Baked goods are constructed alphabetically clockwise from noon," which gave them a bit of information about what kind of letter they were looking for (one pie had a letter that didn't appear in the quilt, so they found it useful to know it was something late in the alphabet), and also told them which way up to hold the pie charts (that turned out not to be particularly relevant, but it's nice to have a correct orientation anyway).
Alf thinks you should time your visits home to coincide with Treasure Hunt.
