The kind my neighbors across the street had when I was growing up.

That's helpful. :P
This one is on Mem Drive, right where Cambridge absurdly allows parking in a travel lane. (I wonder how much the residents pay in bribes.)

This could also be a hybrid Sycamore Maple (that's what in Cambridge). You would need to see the leaves. If you found this tree on a curbside, it's most likely a hybrid - they are wonderful city trees. If you took this picture in a backyard around your home, it may well be a real Sycamore as they were quite popular from about 1920 to 1950 as backyard plantings :-) (Sorry for the long answer - for a while, I really wanted to major in Forestry & Biology)

This is a street tree (on Mem Drive near Harvard), but judging by Google Images I still think it's a sycamore. It is huge, so maybe it's old enough to predate the hybrid?

Crusty Paint Tree. Stay away, it's probably lead.

If it's huge, then it's a sycamore. The Sycamore maple has leaves that are opposite as opposed to alternately spaced on the branch (Sycamore)and doesn't get as large and beefy looking.

Depending upon the gender of the tree, it might be a "Cammo Male Tree"

I can't take credit for it. There was a guy at Noreascon 3 selling ring mail shirts made from lightweight anodized aluminum. He had one shirt made of brown and green rings that he referred to as his "Cammo Mail T-shirt".

This is a reference, I think, which I don't get. I sorry!

The old, bad joke would say it was a dogwood tree. You can tell by the bark!
