It sounds like you spent a day in Düsseldorf. Whatever for? Köln has a lot more to see in the cathedral alone. Or Aachen. Or Xanten. Although the art museum in Ddorf has some amazing glass work. And some incredibly maudlin examples of early 19th century sentimental painting (of which it was apparently a center). Of course, I am prejudiced, having lived there for nearly a year (and I did revisit during one of my off-days in Bonn). Oh wait, I just remembered your grandmother (do I remember correctly?) was from there. I suppose that's reason enough to go there ahead of the other nearby places I mentioned.

My grandmother lived in Dusseldorf until she was 8. I got to see the house she lived in (http://picasaweb.google.com/42itous/MiniGrandTour?authkey=bMX3SZmY5eA#5206187378699124610), and the site where her grandparents lived (though their house was torn down in about the 60s). We had a very nice day wandering around Dusseldorf -- we took a boat tour (their Gehry building is as ugly as ours) and we went to the Aquazoo.

Oh, and the ceramics museum -- I loved the Art Nouveau tiles there. Mostly we wandered around the Altstadt, and we ate at Zum Schiffchen, where my grandmother's grandparents ate often (and it was centuries old even then!)
