I know the correct answer here, but I wanted to raise the question because my definitions are nonstandard. That is, mine are dependent somewhat on what the item is made of.
If your hand-warming garments have one big pocket for all the fingers but are made of leather or are otherwise weatherproof, I'm just as likely to call them gloves as mittens. And if they have individual fingers but are knitted, I'm probably going to call them mittens.
I too don't consider something to be a mitten unless it is a loose, non-windproof constructions such as knitting or crochet. But for me, both the single finger pocket and the loose construction are required for it to be mittens, and I consider my glorious Icelandic knit gloves to be, well, gloves.
Thumbs in the thumb place, Fingers all together. This is the song we sing in mitten weather. When it's cold, it doesn't matter whether Mitten are wool, or made of finest leather. Thumbs in the thumb place, Fingers all together!
