Yay! Bumblebee and Syrphid fly and Rose! Gorgeous colors, and very cool to see the size difference between the fliers!

FYI, the Syrphid fly looks very similar to one that I tentatively identified as Toxomerus marginatus, several years ago, with help from http://bugguide.net .

Oh, that's good to know. Somehow I just assumed it was a tiny bee, based solely on its stripes -- that was silly of me. Thanks for the correction!

Not silly—pretty sure Syrphid flies evolved so predators would mistake them for stinging insects!

I only know about them because I asked a neighbor who's a retired entomologist to identify this (http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/light_of_summer/10496101/113249/113249_original.jpg) one for me. There are a whole lot of them!
