I... architecture? What is happening?

This building hurts my brain a little bit.

Someone wanted two widely-separated fireplaces on each floor and only one chimney at the top, and the bricklayers said "sure, dude, whatever".

It might be relevant that this side of the building used to face an elevated highway. And I think there's a good chance that before the elevated highway was built, this face of the building was enclosed within a longer line of similarly shaped domiciles (which would have allowed for four fireplaces to vent through the one chimney. Very efficient!

Now, of course, it all faces a park. (http://www.rosekennedygreenway.org/parks/)

This helps it all make sense.

I buy the two-chimneys thing (though, whoa, hard to clean), but I'm not sure why the chimney protrudes from the house. OTOH, if it was actually four chimneys, but they got rid of the living rooms on one side, that might explain why the whole thing isn't flush with the outer wall.

Also presumably there's a fireplace on each floor?

...yeah, this is still bizarre. :)
