Thanks to lifecollage's brave pioneering spirit, I was made aware of LJ's capacity to change a username without changing any of the settings on the account.

I waffled for a long time because there's a fee involved, but as majordomo pointed out, haven't I gotten a lot more than $15 worth of entertainment out of reading my friends list?
