Thank you! And apparently the people at the sale yesterday agreed: I sold half of the bags I brought! People were buying gifts. I've got to remember for future sales: people tend to buy large bags for themselves and small ones as gifts.
The only time I sketch it out on paper is if someone orders a bag of specific dimensions. I compose as I go. Normally I'll go into my fabric storage room and choose an interesting fabric, then three or four other fabrics that relate to it somehow. I used to make the flap first and then the body of the bag; these days I'm more likely to start with the body (I don't know why the shift). My favorite way to work is to start with scraps just big enough for pockets, or stripes on a flap, because they determine the size and shape of the bag. I like when the fabric speaks to me that way.
