I've gotten behind on my blogging. This was a Christmas present commissioned by mizarchivist and quiet_elegance for Crime Fighter on the occasion of his graduating from toddler bed to twin size.

Very cool!! (and, fwiw, my boys both sleep with the quilts you made them on their twin beds, even though the quilts aren't twin-sized. They *love* them).

Little J is in a big kid bed already?! We've been starting to wonder what we're doing next when R outgrows her mini-crib. Toddler bed, or full size mattress on the floor? I tried to ask her which option she would prefer, but she says she wants to keep sleeping in her crib.

Well, he's in a twin-sized crib. James built a bunk bed for the boys, since that's the only way to fit two kids in that tiny room. So the bottom bunk has crib rails that can be taken off when we're ready for him to have access to the whole room (the ladder to the top bunk being the main issue).

Jesse switched to a twin bed at 16 months, and it went really smoothly, but kids vary. For instance, my parents didn't switch me to a twin bed until I was almost 4 because I kept saying I liked my crib, and that was also fine :) For Jesse, he all of a sudden decided the crib was like lava, and my parents had an extra (local) twin bed we could borrow, which was low to the ground, but still up some (he did NOT do well with a mattress on the floor). So we figured if the only investment was schlepping the bed from Dorchester to Arlington, it was worth a try, and it went smoothly, so we just never looked back.

In retrospect, if we'd had to buy a bed, I may have gone with a toddler bed if that was cheaper, because we had to change the setup anyway when we had a second kid. If you are not planning on changing furniture for other reasons, I would just go straight to a twin bed to avoid buying extra things and having extra transitions, but that's also totally a personal preference thing.

Well, it just goes to show, every kid is different. We'll see how it goes -- if the transition is traumatic at first, we'll all get over it eventually.

Thanks for your perspective -- it helps me be optimistic that this will be easier than I'd feared.

We went straight to mattress on the floor, never bothered with the in-between size of bed.
