I knew the name before I clicked! Take THAT aphasia!

I just ate a couple of those the other day. Got them at Miso, the new Japanese market just outside Porter Square (on the Arlington side). I find that they are similar to lychee, but I like the flavor of lychee a gazillion times better.

I've never had rambutan fresh, only canned, but in that form I also decided that I much prefer lychee.

I have had fresh lychee and decided that the texture of canned lychee is more uniform and therefore more pleasant. I have also had those lychee candies that slurp out of the little cup -- I adore those. But they probably don't have any natural ingredients at all.

Ya know what does wonders for fresh lychee? Refrigeration. I'm not sure why, but chilling them improves & enhances their flavor. Since I can only get 'em in June & only when I'm paying attention, I tend to eat canned more often, but chilled fresh ones have a brighter flavor & less... um... squeaky flesh? if that makes sense? (Canned ones seem to squeak on my teefers when I eat 'em.)

I know what you mean about the squeakiness. The thing that bothered me about the fresh ones I had was that each had a tough part -- almost woody -- that was unpleasant to chew. Next time I'll have to try fridging them for a few days before I eat them.

Now I want lychees.

Yeah, the woody bits are annoying. It helps if they're really ripe, then they mostly fall off the pit.

Now I want lychees.

Me too. Clearly a can of emergency lychees needs to be stashed in my fridge. I'll have to remember that.
