We went to Shelburne Museum this weekend to see the quilts, among other things. Their current exhibition is called Man-Made Quilts, and features the work of male quilters from the Civil War era to the present. One piece was by Fraser Smith -- it's the third quilt in the third row, called "Calypso" -- and I took a close look at it but still didn't realize it was made of something other than fabric until I read the placard next to it!

I feel like "don't touch" is the default in museums, unless there's a sign explicitly says you can. There were some oblivious people in the gallery at the same time as us who did poke at a quilt, and I'm certain if they'd paid enough attention to know that this one was made of wood, their hands would have been all over it. It frustrated me that although the docent saw what was happening, she didn't say anything to them.

In the case of the wooden quilt, once I knew what I was looking at, I was able to see some wood grain below the paint in the lighter areas.
