Whoever designed the third one read a lot of comic books.

That wheatback looks like it's in great shape. And somehow, looks slightly smaller. I never noticed that the wheatback cents were smaller. Now I need to check for myself.

In this picture it's fairly clear:

Here's (http://xuth.net/pics/random/pennies/IMG_2513_sm_crop.JPG) a more honest picture. Or another image for fun. (http://xuth.net/pics/random/pennies/IMG_2511_sm_crop.JPG) They're all actually fairly close to each other in size. The diameter of the 1950 wheat cent I used in the images was .1 mm smaller than the 2010 coin I used. Presumably that's due to wear.

What year is the wheatback?

That's a good year. (Not as exciting as '43, but still.)

Yeah, that's pretty breathtakingly awful looking.

What's next, Comic Sans? Hey, maybe we could pay Microsoft royalties for every penny we mint.

I wonder if people had a similar opinion of the wheat penny when it was first minted. Its deco font is definitely a product of its time.

yeah... don't know.
(my inherent aesthetics go "but the old font is PRETTY and the new one is UGLY" but... yeah, i know i'm a product of my time and personal aesthetics are not universal :)

I agree with you about the new penny. But I really like the new nickels. And some of the state quarters (Connecticut, for example) are beautiful.

Neither had I. I picked up the 1944 and the 2010 from sidewalks within days of each other.
