In the future of telephone communications, generic hold music will be replaced by a menu of satellite radio stations: "For classic rock, press or say 1; for country music, press or say 2; for hip-hop, press or say 3; for classical music, press or say 4; for up-to-the-minute news and weather, press or say 5..."

For nice, quiet, silence, press 9.

Oh, I wish. :-)

More cleverly, just have the phone send a "hold" signal that tells your own phone to play the music choices you already selected, but that is certainly too customer-friendly for phone companies. :)

I was put on hold a few days ago.

I really didn't care.

So when I got a real person. I asked her to hold and handed the fone to the dog and went for a jog.

According to my cell the call didn't end for another 17 minutes.

:)

The problem is that you have to go through the other options before you get to the music options, e.g., "For instructions in English, press or say 1, for instructions in Spanish, press or say 2, to speak to someone in Department A, press or say 3, to speak to someone in Department B, etc." until we get to For classic rock, press or say 201; for country music, press or say 202; for hip-hop, press or say 203; for classical music, press or say 204; for up-to-the-minute news and weather, press or say 205..." My sanity has long since abandoned me by then.

I have one customer whose cell phone, instead of generating a ringing noise for the caller, plays a Rolling Stones song, which is ok except it's the same goddamn one every time. "Please allow me to introduce myself...." AAAARGH!
