...you listen to every minute of the fund drives because you wouldn't know what else to listen to.

But we have the internet now. We can go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and listen to the same news without the begging.

hmm. yes, but it's not the BBC I listen for; it's Tom Ashbrook. And Prairie Home Companion. And Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. And This American Life.

Just another reason we are friends!

Sean has been listening to Air America, which can be interesting but can also be very annoying.

I have been listening to the Ya Ya sisterhood soundtrack. It is very diverse and cool, and it has "Dimming of the day" on it, a song that I love and my MIL loves so much that she has four versions of it on her ipod.

I used to listen to public radio, but one day I found myself putting on a cable-knit sweater and I freaked out.

Tom Ashbrook is locally produced so you have to go through the WBUR website. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me is available at http://www.npr.org/. This American Life is at http://www.pri.org/tal.html. A Prairie Home Companion is at http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/. You may have to find a station that carries it (and isn't begging this week) and go to their website. The internet should allow you to avoid listening to fundraisers and listen to programs if you want to.

On an unrelated note, I assume you saw Bonnie's posting about a possible Scrabble night.

I thought that all NPR stations do their fund raiser on the same week. Perhaps that is just the way it was done when I was younger.

I don't think so but I could be wrong. I do recall sometimes switching between WBUR and WGBH for "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" though it's possible they were fundraising at different times during the hour rather than during different weeks.

iPod? CDs? Surely you can turn off the radio? :)

I have this weird thing that I like other people to choose what I listen to. Once in a while I want to listen to something specific, but usually I stare at my collection of ~150 CDs and I'm not in the mood for any of them. Yes, of course there's mikefm, but I find the commercials annoying (yeah, yeah, I know). And there's putting the entire music collection on random, which I often do in the car, but I don't know how to do it at home (it would require speaking unix, I think).
