Those look like spikey seed pods. I don't know the plant, but I they're usually dark brown and about 2 inches diameter?

I know the tree you're thinking of, and I wonder if it's a botanical relative of this, but no -- this isn't something that grows around here, I don't think.

rambuties

i think i need a list of the various pan-asian fruits, in english, chinese, indian, ... as going to various ethnic stores, unless you can point sometimes, they have no idea what you're asking for "what is bread fruit"? for example.

though the look on some people's faces when they finally GET that, no, you really ARE asking for a durian... priceless!

Ha! And now I know the name for it, as something other than "those weird spiky fruits that I ate in Thailand." :)

This post is a miniature encapsulation of one of the main plots of a recent award-winning sci-fi novel.

LOL, thank you for that image.

I had to resist the urge to call them "fuzzy balls" in the alt text.

In case you were afraid to follow that link, it's a 1992 album by the band Curve that had those on the cover.

I knew the name before I clicked! Take THAT aphasia!

I just ate a couple of those the other day. Got them at Miso, the new Japanese market just outside Porter Square (on the Arlington side). I find that they are similar to lychee, but I like the flavor of lychee a gazillion times better.

[identity profile] 42itous.livejournal.com 2012-08-17 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had rambutan fresh, only canned, but in that form I also decided that I much prefer lychee.

I have had fresh lychee and decided that the texture of canned lychee is more uniform and therefore more pleasant. I have also had those lychee candies that slurp out of the little cup -- I adore those. But they probably don't have any natural ingredients at all.

[identity profile] kjc.livejournal.com 2012-08-17 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ya know what does wonders for fresh lychee? Refrigeration. I'm not sure why, but chilling them improves & enhances their flavor. Since I can only get 'em in June & only when I'm paying attention, I tend to eat canned more often, but chilled fresh ones have a brighter flavor & less... um... squeaky flesh? if that makes sense? (Canned ones seem to squeak on my teefers when I eat 'em.)

[identity profile] 42itous.livejournal.com 2012-08-17 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about the squeakiness. The thing that bothered me about the fresh ones I had was that each had a tough part -- almost woody -- that was unpleasant to chew. Next time I'll have to try fridging them for a few days before I eat them.

Now I want lychees.

[identity profile] kjc.livejournal.com 2012-08-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the woody bits are annoying. It helps if they're really ripe, then they mostly fall off the pit.

Now I want lychees.

Me too. Clearly a can of emergency lychees needs to be stashed in my fridge. I'll have to remember that.
