One of the joys of both living in one place is that we can buy stuff, put it in the fridge, and eat it before it goes bad.

We're getting seltzer delivered, in those old-fashioned siphon bottles, from Stella Brothers. My parents in Providence have been getting seltzer delivery all my life, and one of the things that made me want to live in Arlington is that they'll deliver here.

We also got our first Boston Organics delivery on Friday. This included three vegetables that I don't think I've ever had before. Kyle cooked the garlic scapes in an omelette yesterday morning. And dinner tonight was a three-course meal: corn on the cob, simply boiled with a little butter and salt; chard greens and shiitake mushrooms (both of which were new to me) sauteed with a little soy sauce; and zucchini and chard stalks with herbs from my own garden cooked in storebought tomato sauce and pasta. I was surprised by the buttery aftertaste of the shiitake mushrooms -- delicious. This was one of those rare occasions that a vegetarian dinner felt more than complete.

Out here in the San Francisco Bay area, we get seltzer delivered by Seltzer Sisters. (Do you think seltzer delivery companies must have a familial name, the way hair salons are required by law to have a punny name?) I hadn't heard of seltzer delivery still existing anywhere else, outside of NYC.

Huh. I googled for seltzer delivery routes, and Seltzer Sisters was the first hit and the rest were either in NY or nostalgic. Stella Bros didn't come up at all, which makes me think there may be other stealth seltzer delivery companies elsewhere.

This (http://www.gastronomica.org/pages/sample4.3.html) was interesting, though.

This was interesting, though.

That certainly was interesting, though i reject the premise. The egg cream is a wonderful and tasty drink.

That said..

WOW! Seltzer delivery around here! WOO HOO!

Not that I can afford it right now, but still!

YAY!!!!

Also worth noting that the reason we get seltzer delivered is that my parents did when I was growing up. Based on these two data points (you and me), I conclude that getting-seltzer-delivered must be genetic.

Mmm... Egg cream...

There used to be (20 years ago) a company that made the seltzer bottle deliveries to Somerville. Not that that helps you now.

Oh my gosh - I think I have to order from Boston Organics place... I wonder if they deliver to condos...

Now if only I could convince [livejournal.com profile] galadhelsul that he liked seltzer... ;)

Also, what's Boston Organics?

It's a service that delivers organice produce to your doorstep once a week (usually Fridays, it seems). You can choose a $25 or $35 box, and choose whether you want mostly fruit, mostly veggies, or all veggies -- and you can ask them to to give you specific things (I asked that anytime they had eggplants they should try and give me an avocado instead). Each week there's a sheet of information about some of the more unusual items, plus some recipes. Some of the stuff is local, most of it is seasonal. I expect in the fall I'll be learning how to make stuffed acorn squash and pumpkin pie.

Darn, Boston Organics doesn't deliver to my part of Dorchester, but I'd love having selzer delivery like I did as a kid again.

And this just may be the New Yorker in me talking, but the egg cream (when made correctly) is pure delight. Let nothing besmirch it. And if you want to taste the perfect one, go to Gem's Spa on 8th St and 2nd Ave in NYC. (They are under new ownership now, but I hear the recipe has been passed down.)

It looks like Stella doesn't deliver to Somerville... Do you think I could share in on the seltzery goodness?

Argh! It looks like LJ burped and delivered my comment anonymously. Here, I try again.

Mebbe. We're getting 10 bottles delivered every other week, and we could possibly up it to every week. Ask us on Sunday, okay?
