Some of my family got together to celebrate what would have been my maternal grandfather's 100th birthday last weekend. My aunt Janet made this nusstorte, from a little recipe booklet we compiled when we celebrated my grandmother's 80th birthday. I never met my grandfather, Rudi Anker -- he died suddenly from a heart attack when my mother and her siblings were children. The last birthday cake that my grandmother made for him was probably a rich chocolate cake, his favorite, but since some of us have problems with chocolate causing headaches, we opted for the nusstorte instead.

It's very pretty. Funny to celebrate the birthdate of someone you've never met, and a lovely idea for a family gathering.

Huh, it's never struck me as funny because I grew up celebrating Rudi's birthday -- usually we got carnations because they were his favorite flower.
