a cloth doll, naked except for shoes, with about 20 bandaids covering every limb and its chest

Bandages are a cure all!

Someone posited (and it rings true to me) that this doll has absorbed all the owies of the day -- sidewalk falls, toy relinquishments, requests for my attention denied -- and the bandaids represent R doing self-care.

If so, then good for R!

It's kind of a disturbing image, though.

I agree. That's the sinister lighting in combination with the prostrate pose.

Exactly. That's how it manages to be both disturbing and comforting.

When friends ask for gift suggestions for 3-5yo kids, I always say, their own box of bandaids. (Also, a box of their own REAL cooking tools or dress-up clothes, both from the nearest thrift store.)

When I showed my bf this picture, he said that he still has to keep the household bandaids hidden from his youngest, who is eight. :)

To me, this photo seems poignant, rather than sinister. Mileage varies!

I tend to see it that way too.
