Would someone please comment on what size these photos are showing up in your feed? In mine they're HUGE, in spite of the fact that I'm specifying a height of 450 pixels, give or take depending on the orientation of the photo. It's embarrassing. I hope it's just my browser or something?

On my Windows 8 laptop, using IE, the default seems to be
5" X 5" - it's not taking over the screen.

Ah, that's good to know -- thanks!

Acceptably sized. Less than a third of my screen wide. (Google Chrome.)

Looks fine on chrome on a Mac for me.

Firefox's 'View Image Info' says "1,024px × 965px (scaled to 478px × 450px)", so I suspect the problem is that some browsers aren't honoring whatever LJ component is requesting the scaling. It might be more reliable to resize the images yourself before posting.

Huh. That seems very plausible.
Problem with your advice is, I'm used to iPhoto, and now that that's been replaced with Photos, I can't even figure out how to export jpegs in lower resolution anymore. Even if I could do that, I still wouldn't know how to specify the size in pixels before posting (html for LJ posts is the closest I get to coding skills).

GIMP will resize and export to JPEG with a chosen quality, as will DigiKam. A quick search revealed various Mac methods which may be out of date since iPhoto vanished. But some refer to doing resizing in Preview; does that still exist?

I just installed the new version of GIMP (I hadn't used it in a while), and I tried exporting as PDF but it didn't offer an option to resize and the resultant PDF is ten times the size of the image I exported from Photos (27MB as opposed to 2.7MB).

You don't have to be my IT guy on this (but thank you for the brainstorming you've done so far). My resident geek can help me find the right menu in GIMP when he gets home tomorrow.

They show up ginormous (8 inches wide by at least that much high) in my feed, but I have noscript and adblock and all kinds of other things running, so maybe firefox is ignoring LJ's resizing commands.

If I click through to your post, or look at it on your journal page, it is more like 4.5" x 4.5", which is totally fine.
