We thought it was a garter snake at first, but when we tried to get it to move (because it was in a soon-to-be-driven-upon driveway), it tried to attack majordomo's shoe.

I think it IS a garter snake, but that doesn't mean it won't attack. They even have a (mild) venom! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garter_snake#Venom
