Those look like spikey seed pods. I don't know the plant, but I they're usually dark brown and about 2 inches diameter?

I knew the name before I clicked! Take THAT aphasia!

I just ate a couple of those the other day. Got them at Miso, the new Japanese market just outside Porter Square (on the Arlington side). I find that they are similar to lychee, but I like the flavor of lychee a gazillion times better.
