I don't think it's a lilac, as it would be waaaay out of season... there's a theory in the following comment that it might be a butterfly bush, which seems plausible to me, given that I got this picture a split second after the butterfly flew away!

Wikipedia's photos think this is right, too -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddleia -- but it looks like you aren't going to get down to the species level (unless it looked like a volunteer or weed where you found it, in which case it looks like this one is a good bet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddleja_davidii). So, "Butterfly Bush" is probably the ideal answer. :)
