apparently a common ornamental, brittle wood, breaks off large chunks in winter storms. annoyingly non edible :) we have them all over my complex.

i think urbpan had a write up on them a while ago.

Yep. A very common ornamental - my neighbors can definitely attest to having large chunks of the tree fall off in storms. They are pretty, top heavy trees though!
