Question - what would you have thought of damping down the "highlights" to bring out the details of the stairs deeper into the photo? I think that I might have done that, and now I'm thinking it would have been the wrong choice.

That's a good question. I don't really know how to manipulate the contrast and color balance and stuff like that, so I generally post photos that I haven't altered beyond cropping. One of these days I should challenge myself to learn how to play with the editing tools more.

I guess I didn't really answer your question. I think it would be interesting to bring out more detail in the bricks, but yes, it would be a different image. I kind of like the geometrical shapes that come from the high contrast.

FWIW I agree with both your instinct and your second-guess. I like that the tiers of bricks visually blend together in the far field.
